Basic Knowledge of Smoke Detectors

With the development of technology, daily necessities and equipment closely related to people are gradually shifting towards intelligence. With the increasing emphasis on home security, intelligent security devices are highly respected. In terms of fire prevention, smoke detectors are also favored by people. The following is an introduction to knowledge related to smoke detectors:

1 What is a smoke detector?

Smoke detectors are devices that achieve fire prevention by monitoring the concentration of smoke. Ionic smoke sensing is used inside the smoke detector. Ionic smoke sensor is a technologically advanced, stable and reliable sensor widely used in various fire alarm systems. Its performance is far superior to gas sensitive resistor type fire alarms.

2 The benefits of using smoke detectors

The use of smoke detectors can quickly detect fires, reduce casualties, and minimize fire losses. Fire losses are often limited to the substance that first catches fire. Various fire statistics also indicate that the shorter the interval between a fire and its discovery, the lower the fire mortality rate. In fact, the mortality rate of household fires protected by smoke detectors is lower than that of those without such protection.

3 Precautions for installing smoke detectors

  • Do not install outdoors
  • Do not install in areas with high air flow such as air supply outlets, ventilation fans, and doors
  • Do not install in environments with temperatures exceeding -10~+50 ℃ or in damp areas
  • The installation position of the smoke detectors must be greater than 0.75 meters from the wall corner
  • Must be dustproof and moisture-proof

4 Maintenance and upkeep of smoke detectors

  • Due to factors such as dust, the sensitivity of the smoke detectors may decrease, so regular testing and maintenance are necessary.
  • Check the smoke detectors once a week by pressing the test button.
  • Clean the smoke detectors every six months: Turn off the power and use a soft brush to clean the dust.

5 Other matters

Due to the sensitivity of ion smoke detectors to small particles, they will have a faster response during cooking. If you have encountered such problems, you can have the following options:

(1) If the smoke detector is installed far from the cooking area, the smoke particles will become much weaker when they reach the smoke detector. If you choose this method, you should understand the direction of air flow. Otherwise, it won’t have any effect.

(2) Install a photoelectric smoke detector. When a fire produces smaller particles, you may miss the opportunity to alarm earlier, but you also save the trouble of multiple smoke detectors malfunctioning.

(3) Install an ion/photoelectric combined smoke detector. If two types of sensors are combined, the sensitivity of the ion sensor can be set to be lower, which will reduce false alarms in the device. At the same time, you can also have a smoke detector with high sensitivity for both fast spreading raging fires and slow spreading smoldering fires.

(4) Install an ion smoke detector with silent function. This way, you can reduce the sensitivity of the alarm by 15 minutes and avoid the harsh alarm sound when smoking or cooking.

It is necessary to install smoke detectors for the prevention of household fires. Although smoke detectors may generate false alarms due to some small factors, we cannot ignore the installation of smoke detectors. Through reasonable installation and correct operation of smoke detectors, we aim to minimize false alarms and ensure the safety of our lives and property.
